Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) - WATCH IT NOW!!! (6 out of 5 stars) - Saw early viewing with fellow Panickers just before official launch on the 17th. Don't worry, no spoilers from us! Just the strongest recommendation I can possibly give this year. If you can watch only 1 superhero movie this year, if you enjoyed any of the Spider-Man movies Sony has ever made, this movie is a must see.
This movie single-handedly saves the MCU at the last minute from a whole year of dismal films. Black Widow? A bit of a let down. Shang-Chi? Disgusting. Eternals? Meh...
No Way Home even tops Venom 2 for best superhero movie this year easily. It is the best film in the MCU Spidey trilogy and a wonderful love letter to fans of almost 20 years of Sony Spider-Man films.
Firstly, I never liked the MCU Peter Parker. He is a screw up, and he continues to be a screw up right up until this movie. From the trailers, you can tell he goes to Dr Strange for help but winds up breaking the Multiverse. But in this case, his mistakes result in one hell of a Spider-Man movie.
The villains steal the show in this movie mostly, especially Doctor Octopus and Green Goblin from the original Sony movies. The other 3 are less impressive but still drive the story; we have Lizard, Electro and Sandman from the later (less-successful) Sony films. Jamie Foxx tries to chew up the scenery as Electro but doesn't impress as much as Dafoe's Goblin or Molina's Octopus.
Lastly I suddenly find myself adoring Zedaya's MJ in No Way Home. I never liked her before in the previous two MCU Spidey movies but after seeing her in Dune and this movie, I feel we definitely need to see more of her work from now on.
Not really a spoiler, but as a longtime comic fan I can give you a hint that only hardcore Spider-Man fans will understand. The story adapts the "One More Day" and "One Moment in Time" comic storylines, both are among the most heart-breaking stories in Spider-Man's long comic history.
Stay tuned after the credits for a sneak peek at the next big MCU movie: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness! Coming next year! Can't wait!
Forgive this fanboy for dragging on. Last comment, the one and only thing keeping this movie from being absolutely perfect was the lack of a Stan Lee cameo. This is the greatest Spider-Man movie ever so far, and his creator never got to appear in it (or even see it). I hope he is still watching from wherever the best of us go after we leave this mortal realm. Until next time, true believers! And go watch this movie before some f$%ker on the internet spoils it for you!
