How bad is it? Think about which of the 3 earlier Matrix movies you liked the least...it will still be better than this one. It relies too much on the previous movies for newcomers to understand but it does not provide enough fanservice to satisfy returning fans. So basically unlike "Spider-Man: No Way Home", which is pure nostalgia goodness. Just go watch that instead.

Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne Moss return as Neo and Trinity and they are the only real reasons for fans to watch the movie. They are older now, but they are both in good shape and still fit the roles they made iconic all those years ago. The new Morpheus and Agent Smith are a bad joke, and their terrible portrayals hurt the movie a lot. The rest of the cast is just there but I kind of like the tomboyish, blue-haired Captain Bugs portrayed by Jessica Henwick (whom I adored as Colleen Wing in Netflix's Iron Fist series).

The movie is 2.5 hours long, like No Way Home. But painful. Without spoiling you, basically the beginning is very meta and we follow Neo wondering "what is reality" and "am I crazy". The middle part is nostalgia and bad reuse of footage from the previous Matrix movies. The final part is basically Star Wars meets World War Z. Have you ever wondered how a Jedi would fight zombies? Well, watch the end of this movie and you will know.

This movie does pose an interesting question about the illusion of choice. As a Matrix fan, do you really have a choice to avoid watching this movie even if you know it is not good? No, you don't. Eventually you will still have to watch it, otherwise you will feel you are missing out on something.

But as a Matrix fan, I cannot help but feel that all the characters should have just taken the Blue Pill so the rest of us do not have to sit through over 2 hours of this wasted potential.
